The Five Love Languages, Hormones, and Primary Foods

Are you familiar with the Five LOVE Languages?

If not, then they are as follows: gift giving and receiving, physical touch, quality time, acts of service and words of affirmation. Typically if this is how you express love, then this is how you may wish to receive it. And this isn't strictly about expressing it with your partner. Expressing love is for everyone... your neighbor, your roommate, your furry friends, your child, your parent, your BFF and your coworker.

Let's talk a little about each one:

1) Gift giving and receiving

You may know the expressions, "it is better to give than to receive," or "it's the thought that counts." Giving is mentioned several times in the Bible. There is no rule that a gift has to be expensive or materialized, especially when it comes from the heart. Giving brings a satisfaction that makes you feel good. Cue the serotonin!

2) Physical touch

How many videos have you watched where loved ones hug? Tons! A hug, a handshake, a pat on the back, holding hands... there are all ways to express love to another person.

3) Quality time

Spending quality time together, is really about paying attention and giving your energy to another individual. Know what your person enjoys, whether it's grabbing coffee, going for a hike, or going to a sporting event. The opportunities are endless!

4) Acts of service

This can range from washing someone's car to preparing a home-cooked meal, or even to organizing a closet. A favor or helpful task, can be large or small, as well as a selfless act.

5) Words of affirmation

Words can build us up, or sometimes tear us down. They ease anxiety, offer comfort and make us feel good.

So how does this relate back to primary foods?

CUE the serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin! These are your "feel good" and "happy" hormones. What an easy and great way to boost these neurotransmitters. This also lowers cortisol (stress) levels. As you know, everything is tied together and keeps your body running smoothly. Something we all want.

I hope reading this entices you to express your love language to someone today!

Happy Valentine’s Day!
