Summer Skin & Clean Sunscreen
By guest contributor: Sydney Billings
Although sunscreen should be worn daily, no matter the season, sunscreen and skincare in the summer are extra crucial. Sunscreen should be part of a daily routine, even without plans to be in direct sunlight, even on rainy days. Sunscreen should be the one product you always have, and it is important to note you need more than what is said to be in some makeup. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70, and more than 2 people in the US die from skin cancer every hour.
Selecting the perfect sunscreen can be challenging due to current marketing practices... there are endocrine disrupters in many sunscreens. In selecting a sunscreen, you should avoid ingredients such as avobenzone, octocrylene, and homosalate, just to name a few. Reading ingredients on products can become time-consuming and frustrating. There are a few apps to assist in selecting a sunscreen (or product in general) that will benefit you rather than harm you. The “Yuka” app, the “Think Dirty” app, and EWG’s “Healthy Living” app can all help you to achieve your healthiest and happiest skin!
What NOT to use/do on sunburn:
Topical alcohol of any kind
Food-related “home remedies”
Scratch, exfoliate, or pop blisters
Petroleum jelly products
Prolonged sun exposure
