Almond Milk: My Top Recommended Brands

How often do you read labels? Do you read the label on a carton of cow's milk? Of course not! We all know what the ingredient is..right? So do you read the ingredients of alternative milks like almond or is it just grab-and-go? The next time you are in the grocery store (or you can look online), check out the ingredients of your alternative milk. It might just surprise you!

One brand contains:
ALMOND MILK (FILTERED WATER, ALMONDS), CALCIUM CARBONATE, SEA SALT, POTASSIUM CITRATE, SUNFLOWER LECITHIN, GELLAN GUM, NATURAL FLAVORS, D-ALPHA-TOCOPHEROL (NATURAL VITAMIN E).

I have also seen ingredients such as:

  • Sugar

  • Pea protein

  • Palm oil,

  • Carrageenan, and

  • Locust bean gum!

These really do not sound very appetizing to me.

Many of these additives can cause digestive issues, slow the rate of motility down and cause allergic reactions. Sunflower lecithin side effects have been recorded as diarrhea, bloating and cramping. Carrageenan has its own side effects and triggers an immune response in the body that causes inflammation. Palm oil is high in saturated fat which raises LDL cholesterol and increases the risk of heart disease. And of course no one needs extra sugar.

If you aren't into making your own almond milk (y'all, it's so easy!), look for the brands with the least amount of ingredients:

Made with just nuts and water, this is as close to drinking whole almonds as you can get.
